American Kidney Fund Pairs Up with Atlantans to Fight Kidney Disease

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) November 08, 2011

The American Kidney Fund will host Kidney Action Day featuring the Steps That Count walkathon in Atlanta on Saturday, November 12th, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at Turner Field.

Kidney Action Day, free and open to the public, begins at 9 a.m. and runs until 3 p.m., with free health screenings, healthy food samples, cooking and exercise demonstrations, and other family-friendly activities to increase awareness of kidney disease. The free health screenings will check for indicators of kidney and heart health, diabetes, and other important health measures. The Steps That Count walkathon portion of the event begins at 10 a.m. and follows a course around the Turner Field complex, raising funds for programs and services to help patients impacted by kidney disease.

The mission of the American Kidney Fund is to fight kidney disease through direct financial support to patients in need, education and prevention efforts. In September, the organization launched Pair Up, a national prevention campaign empowering women to fight kidney disease.

In 2010, the American Kidney Fund provided $ 1.2 million in treatment-related financial assistance to more than 1,700 dialysis patients in Atlanta. This is the second year the American Kidney Fund has hosted Kidney Action Day in Atlanta, where participants will receive instant test results for finger stick glucose, blood pressure, BMI, cholesterol, weight and height.

?Pairing up with communities across the nation to raise awareness of kidney disease and its leading causes?diabetes and high blood pressure?is a critical part of the mission of the American Kidney Fund, especially in the Atlanta metropolitan area where rates of kidney disease are above the national average.? said LaVarne A. Burton, president and CEO of the American Kidney Fund. ?We?re expecting hundreds of Atlantans to bring their friends and family to Kidney Action Day and join us in the fight against kidney disease.?

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is the nation?s ninth leading cause of death, and it is estimated that as many as 31 million people in the U.S. are living with the disease. In Georgia, rates of kidney disease are higher than the national average. Diabetes is the number one cause of kidney failure, followed by high blood pressure. Together, these conditions account for nearly three quarters of all cases of kidney failure. CKD can develop slowly or quickly, and most who are affected have no symptoms, therefore they don?t get tested. However, if tested and detected early, chronic kidney disease can be slowed or even stopped.

?Getting tested is the first step in the fight against kidney disease. I learned about my condition 13 years ago and have been on dialysis ever since.? said Schwanda Owens, an AKF advocate and kidney disease patient from Union City, GA. ?I wish I had taken steps to protect my general health and kidneys before I was diagnosed. I want others to be aware of the simple steps they can take to prevent kidney disease.?

AKF has made it a priority to extend its mission of fighting kidney disease by locally promoting the importance of early screening, education, and prevention methods.

This year?s event is sponsored by Amgen Inc., American Renal Associates, Sanofi and U.S. Renal Care. For more information, visit http://www.kidneyfund.org.

Healthy Food Choices for Your Kitchen

Knowing how to have healthy food choices in your kitchen will keep your family eating right. It is very difficult to stay healthy with a kitchen filled with your favorite treats and unhealthy standards. Throw out the bad and start buying the good food if you want to make any progress in your health.

THROW OUT ANYTHING WITH (Partially) HYDROGENATED OILS – Start your healthy food choices today. I am not a scientist so I can not even begin to tell you how terrible these oils are for your health, but I will say that they contribute significantly to plaque building up in your arteries and heart disease. Do not eat food with partially hydrogenated oils in it.

THROW OUT ANYTHING WITH HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP – Recently I have seen ads on television claiming that HFCS is the same as sugar. Don’t be fooled. HFCS bypasses your body’s natural process and goes straight to your blood stream. This is very bad for your system and contributes to obesity and getting diabetes. IT IS NOT THE SAME AS SUGAR. Sugar is healthier. Do not eat food with HFCS in it.

DON’T BUY ON THE INNER ISLES OF THE GROCERY STORE – You know where all of the packaged foods are. Try to avoid these areas. The healthy areas are around the outer isles, such as the meat department, bakery, produce, and dairy. You can make healthy food choices every time you go to the store.

CUT OUT CEREALS – Cereals are very high in sugar. I am not sure if there is such as thing as a cereal that is healthy. Any health benefits are lost with the high sugar content.

EAT STEEL CUT OATS or GROATS, NOT ROLLED OATS – Rolled oats are processed over and over again, taking out most of the goodness of the wholegrain. I know that steel cut oats take much longer to cook, but they are worth it and you can prepare a large amount ahead of time and then just heat it up each morning. If you are preparing your oats in less than 30 minutes, most likely they are not very healthy.

EAT WHOLE WHEAT BREAD – Most of the breads on the shelves at the grocery store are not healthy, I don’t care what they call themselves. Buy your bread in the healthfood section of the store. Sprouted wheatberries is the best. Isn’t funny that there is only a small section of the grocery store called the healthfood section. The whole store should be healthy food. Ironic.

BUY BROWN RICE – Not white rice. Sorry, no more minute rice. If your rice takes less than 50 minutes to cook, then it is not the healthy kind.

BUY WHOLE WHEAT PASTA – Are you getting the hint now. No white flour. Buy everything whole wheat.

BUY CORN TORTILLAS instead of white flour.

BUY EASY TO EAT – Fruits and vegetables in small containers, such as blueberries, tomatoes, raspberries. Lots of apples and bananas. Remember 5 servings a day. Start keeping track.

AVOID CANNED GOODS – Avoid canned goods when possible. They are usually very high in sodium.

AVOID NITRATES – Many packaged meats such as hot dogs and salami are filled with nitrates. Just another thing to be aware of.

BUY REAL CHEESE – American and Velveeta are not real cheese, they are processed cheese products or something. Buy cheddar, swiss or monterey jack.

Healthy Foods for Healthy Hair

Commercials and magazine ads tell us on a regular basis that we need a quality shampoo and conditioner for healthy, shiny hair.  Hair care products are only part of the story, though.  For truly healthy hair, a diet consisting of healthy food is required.

Hair grows at the rate of 1/4 to 1/2 inch every month.  The strength and health of that new growth is based on the nutrients that have fed it.  Eating a diet based on lean proteins, whole grains and plenty of fresh produce will create a healthy foundation for your body and hair.  It is also important to avoid processed foods and products high in sugar.

The Nutrients Needed for Healthy Hair

Protein
– Hair is mostly protein and requires more of it to remain strong.  Good sources of protein include eggs, fish, meat, cheese, soy products, yogurt, and cottage cheese.  Salmon is one of the best forms of protein for healthy hair, as it also contains high levels of omega-3 fatty acids, B-12 and iron.

Iron – Iron prevents hair loss and changes in pigmentation.  Iron is found in red meats, legumes, eggs, dried fruit, dark green, leafy vegetables and whole grain cereals.  Increase the amount of iron your body absorbs by combining these foods with ones high in Vitamin C.

B Vitamins – B vitamins promote cell growth and repair, while preventing hair loss.  Foods high in B vitamins include poultry, beef, fish, whole grains, green vegetables, beans, sunflower seeds, peas, nuts and nutritional yeast.  Look for B-12 in fortified foods, such as cereals.

Vitamin C
– Vitamin C helps with iron absorption.  It is a powerful antioxidant and it supports capillary health.  Vitamin C, along with Vitamin A, is needed for the production of sebum, the oily substance secreted by hair follicles.  Sebum is the body’s natural way of conditioning the hair.  Vitamin C can be found in citrus fruits, melons, berries, bananas, leafy green vegetables, green peppers, avocados, artichokes and parsley.

Vitamin A – Vitamin A helps promote a healthy scalp.  It is required by the body for the production of sebum.  Good sources of Vitamin A include carrots, sweet potatoes, squash, broccoli, apricots, cantaloupe, oily fish, dark green leafy vegetables and tomatoes.

Vitamin E – Vitamin E helps with protein synthesis, circulation and cellular repair.  It is also an antioxidant. Sources of Vitamin E include egg yolks, avocados, nuts, dark green vegetables, legumes, wheat germ and whole grains.

Beta-carotene – Another antioxidant, Beta-carotene is responsible for protein synthesis and helps prevent hair loss.  Beta-carotene is found in fruits and vegetables that are green, yellow or orange.

Biotin – Biotin deficiency is rare, but it is can be the cause of brittle hair and cause the scalp to become scaly.  Biotin can be found in beans, molasses, nuts, fish, dairy products and meat.  Eating three or more cups of lentils or beans each week will give you ample biotin, zinc, and iron for healthy hair, as well as a good source of healthy protein.

Zinc – Zinc prevents dandruff and hair loss.  Zinc is associated with protein-rich foods, meaning it can be found in meats, fish, shellfish, beans, lentils, brown rice and dairy products.

Omega-3 fatty acids – Essential fatty acids promote overall hair health.  Omega-3 can be found in salmon, mackerel, tuna, sardines, trout, walnuts, almonds, flaxseed oil, avocados, olives and pumpkin seeds.

Silica – Silica increases hair strength and helps prevent breakage.  Silica is often reduced when products are processed.  Try to use organic produce and products whenever possible.  Silica can be found in rice, oats, lettuce, asparagus, onions, strawberries, cabbage, cucumbers, celery, cauliflower, green leafy vegetables, and sunflower seeds.

Correcting and Preventing Common Hair Problems

Common hair problems are often a sign of the body being deficient in one or more of the nutrients listed above.

Dry, brittle hair – This may be a sign of the diet lacking in essential fatty acids, silica or biotin.  Also, make sure you keep your hair hydrated by drinking six to eight glasses of water each day.

Greasy hair – Not getting enough Vitamin B in your diet can lead to oily or greasy hair.  Increase the amount of Vitamin B-rich foods in your diet and stay away from oily foods.

Thinning hair and hair loss – Thinning hair or hair that is falling out can be a sign of a deficiency in protein, Vitamin E, Iron or B Vitamins.  Hair loss can also be a sign of a thyroid problem or other health problems, so talk to your doctor if your hair loss continues or is severe.

Scheme aims to combat obesity in Philadelphia

One in three adults in Philadelphia is obese and one in ten suffers from diabetes. Residents of the city, the fifth largest in the US, say it is difficult to find healthy food choices, especially in low-income neighbourhoods. Experts refer to these areas as “food deserts”. To combat the problem, federal, state and local governments are steering shoppers to places like Salah Atallah’s family grocery – where local residents can redeem vouchers for discounts on healthy food items. Al Jazeera’s Tom Ackerman reports from Philadelphia.

Healthy food for your babies

There are food that are healthy for babies and then food that is not right for babies. Babies can only take in soft food or food that is made for babies. If you give babies a lot of adult food they will have trouble processing it. Soft is the word when it comes to kids. You should stock your home with baby food or soft food. It’s best that you buy food made for babies. There are foods over the counter labeled for babies only. They are apple sauce, milk, fruity food and all other soft food. Kids can’t eat heavy meat, high fat food, burgers, fries, chocolate, and all other adult food just yet. They will not process these right. Kids can eat these foods after they are over 9 or 10 years old. If they’re younger than that it’s best that you give them soft, kids food.

It’s better to start them out eating healthy food rather than eating non-healthy food. They will eat the way that they were trained to eat since they were young. If you want your kids to have a healthy eating pattern, you can teach them how to eat healthy when they’re younger. They will remember what you taught them and they will eat healthily when they grow up. When it comes to dinner time, you should teach them about fruits and vegetables. The more they eat them the better. You can tell them why fruits and vegetables are good for their health. When children are young, they need good nutrition because their bones and bodies are developing and they need the essential nutrition. They can grow up short or not well developed if they didn’t have the proper nutrition. If they eat a lot of high fat food, they can grow up obese.

The food pyramid is a great way to keep you on track when it comes to feeding your kids with proper nutrition. They need a little bit of everything. They need carbohydrates, fruits and vegetables, and proteins. They should not be fed with high fat foods. Junk food is not appropriate for kids. When they’re young, you should focus on calcium, proteins, fruits and vegetables. They need the essentials in order to grow up healthy. You can keep in mind that their bodies are not well developed yet so they will have a harder time with adult food and high fats food. They can end up with digestion problems. When you’re feeding young kids, you should cut out food finely so that they don’t choke on it.

Healthy Foods For Healthy Women

Eating different food is without a doubt important for both sexes, but science demonstrates that for women, there are disparate especial foods that could supply that supplementary edge that they need.  It’s about nutrition that could help defend from various diseases like osteoporosis, heart disease, breast cancer…  Begin playing these “cooking games” in you kitchen, and better you health.

-  Tests demonstrate that foods rich with lycopene can play a role in preventing from breast and cervical cancers.  Tomatoes take part of this group, but the analyses demonstrate that the safety comes from a way of eating rich in vegetables in general.

-  Flaxseed is a plant based on omega 3 fats, fibre, and lignans – disease-fighting combines.  The analyses demonstrate that flaxseed can cut hot flashes, as well “bad” cholesterol and triglycerides.

-  Several people use kale in their menu, but several don’t have that routine.  It’s beneficial to know that this vegetable has so many beneficial things.  Lutein and zeazanthin are antioxidants that defend the eyes, but as well there is a daily worth quantity of vitamin C and a great quantity of vitamin K – an effective bone builder that stimulates bone proteins wanted to prevent osteoporosis.

-  Salmon is so full with omega 3 fats and gives a few exclusive benefits for women.  Oils in this sort of fatty fishes can help post-partum depression, particularly if you take during the third trimester.  If you are in your forties and beyond, estrogens levels begin to lower.  Eating fatty fish can help continue the ticker healthy and guards from heart disease also.  The right dosage will be two servings of salmon, or different fatty fish, per week.

-  Cranberry juice is recommended when it comes to handling with women’s urinary tract infections.  It is acidic and has a lot of vitamin C, but in this instance antioxidants named proanthocyanins are principal actors.  They stop bacteria from binding to the walls of the bladder where they can reproduce and stimulate, or stress an infection.

-  Drinking yogurt is beneficial but Greek yogurt has double the protein of most yogurts and far less sugar.  The tests demonstrate that taking higher levels of protein (30 percent of calories) serves women with weight loss, muscle keeping, and pushes healthier aging.

-  Consuming walnuts can battle breast cancer and osteoporosis.  According to several analyses only two ounces of walnuts per day can help delay grow of breast cancer and reduce tumour growth.  Walnuts are full with antioxidants named phytosterols, by now known cancer fighters but here are as well the omega 3 fats.  Another study demonstrates that diets full with in this same plant are adept at stopping extra bone turnover which keeps bones firm and healthy.
